dr. Judith van der Elst

Judith van der Elst is als docent-onderzoeker werkzaam bij de lectoraten Art & Sustainability en Image in Context, beide gelieerd aan Academie Minerva. Ze is opgeleid als archeoloog/antropoloog, met name in New Mexico, en leidt als sociaal geëngageerd onderzoeker een semi-nomadisch leven.

De overkoepelende vraag in haar onderzoek is hoe de mens zijn relaties met de natuurlijke omgeving ervaart en vormgeeft. Als onderzoeker wil ze academische kennis en artistieke werkwijzen verbinden, om zo de huidige maatschappelijke uitdagingen meer inzichtelijk te maken.

Dit doet zij in nauwe samenwerking met organische landbouwers, ecologisch georiënteerde ontwerpers en kunstenaarscollectieven zoals Bioart society in Finland.  Van der Elst wil in haar werk nieuwe manieren van lesgeven en leren in het veld creëren, in aanvulling op de traditionele onderzoeksinstituten en - organisaties.

Judith van der Elst holds a BA in Art history & archaeology (UVA), an MA in Pre-Columbian Archaeology (Leiden University) and a PhD in Anthropology/Archaeology from the University of New Mexico, USA. She is specialized in geospatial science and technologies and spatial cognition. She participated and contributed to a UCSB program toward integrating visual spatial thinking in the social sciences curricula. She has since focused on developing transdisciplinary methodologies within and beyond academic boundaries, for instance in collaboration with Art Technology and Science lab at UNM and Bioart society, Finland.

She is part-time employed at Research Centre Art & Societyç where she contributes her expertise to activities within the lectorate Art & Sustainability and for the lectorate Image in Context she is lead researcher to investigate the role of art in a project on the ethical, legal and social aspects of the implementation of AI in Health (ELSA-NN). She also maintains her independent research practice.
