How the MIC Flex format works

Our flexible modular study format means you can fit your studies around your work, family, and other commitments. Each module can be taken individually, and stacked towards credit building certificates or a full MA Diploma. You will attain the same competencies and knowledge as the full-time version of the programme. We offer 4 core flexible modules that will help you excel in your current workplace or prepare for a career shift:

  • Corporate communication Consultant 
  • Strategic Brand Manager 
  • Issues & Crisis Communication Strategist   
  • Behavior Change Facilitator

After completing all 4 modules you can register as a student and complete the graduation project (in your own company or consultation-based) to obtain your master's degree.

Goals of the Programme (Graduate Profile)
MIC graduates are well-rounded and responsible leaders of international communication, known for their strategic thinking and criticality. MIC graduates demonstrate leadership capabilities needed to work at expert managerial or consultancy levels. They can bring a global perspective to the challenges and opportunities of the digital and sustainable society. They embrace complexity, anticipate future change and propose innovative solutions to open-ended (emerging) communication problems, using various perspectives from different disciplines.                                                                                                   

Tailored Content                                                                                                                  
Each module is designed to be immediately applicable, enabling you to implement new insights and innovations in your workplace from day one.  All four modules in year 1 share a common structure. The modules deal with core topics specific to a professional communication role. Each one has an integrating capstone project at its center supported through theory topics, research, and professional skills practice. The graduation project module is supported through supervision.

Module 1: Corporate Communication Consultant (15 EC)
This module focuses on the dynamic and changing role of the corporate communication consultant. By working with different stakeholders and creating culturally sensitive messaging, corporate communication leaders build accountability and stakeholder engagement, shaping the company’s reputation and success on a global scale. More information and apply for this module.
 
Module 2: Strategic Brand Manager (15 EC)
This module provides advanced knowledge and skills essential for a strategic international brand manager. You will learn to develop brand strategies that align with organizational purpose and cultural values while resonating across diverse markets. Topics include brand managemt, marketing communication, online research, and intercultural communication theory. More information and apply for this module.
 
Module 3: Issues and Crisis Communication Strategist (15 EC)
Even minor issues can quickly escalate into major crises in today's societies, especially with news spreading to the public within minutes.  As an issues and crisis communication strategist, you will address crisis challenges in fast-developing digital media arenas. More information and apply for this module.
 
Module 4: Behavioural Change Facilitator (15 EC)
Making communications more effective lies at the heart of successful behaviour change initiatives and there is a real business need for communicators to design their communications through a behavioural lens. As an international facilitator, you will promote behavior change among global stakeholders by creating and implementing strategies and interventions that benefit individuals and societies. More information and apply for this module.

Module 5: Graduation Project (30 EC)
The Graduation Project signifies the completion of your entire master's degree in terms of understanding the complexities of a global context and working environment. By the end of the semester, you will produce a research report and a professional communication strategy that satisfies your company's communication requirements and the criteria of a professional master's program.

Who is this study for

For working professionals looking to develop or improve their communication leadership and strategic skills, the MIC prepares graduates to excel in their current roles or prepare for a career change that includes greater responsibilities in communication leadership and management.

Entry requirements

  • Bachelor's or related degree in a related discipline
  • A minimum of two years' relevant work experience
  • Working in a relevant field of employment at least 25 hours per week at the same time as you are studying, proven by a “werkgeversverklaring” (employer’s statement).
  • A brief motivation letter where you can tell us why this master will be a good step in your career and how you see yourself applying it in your current job.
  • Proof of English proficiency through one of the following certificates: IELTS, TOEFL, CAE, Pearson PTE or LanguageCert (see exemptions or specific required scores below*)

*You are exempt of English Language Certification if:

  • You are a Dutch applicant
  • You hold a previous qualification obtained at an English-taught institution within the EU/EEA and can prove that your prior education was full time English-taught through a Statement of medium of instruction. The exemption is only granted if the  programme was completed within two years prior to the starting date of the MIC programme.
  • You are a citizen of or holds previous qualification from the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Great Britain or Ireland. For non-citizens of the aforementioned countries, the exemption is only granted if the  programme was completed within two years prior to the starting date of the MIC programme.

*English Certification Minimum Scores:

  • IELTS (Academic): a minimum overall score of 6.5 with no sub-scores below 6
  • TOEFL ibt: with a minimum overall score of 90 with minimum 18 in Reading, 19 in Listening, 19 in Speaking and 23 in Writing
  • Cambridge English Advanced (CAE): minimum of grade C
  • Pearson PTE Academic Pearson overall 61 and subscore: Writing: 63, Listening: 49, Speaking: 47 and Reading: 54
  • LanguageCert overall 70, subscores 33

Duration
Our expectation is that you will complete the MIC Flex within 18 months of study.

Study load
You learn through teaching sessions on campus, supported through our online learning environment. You will work independently on assignments and invest time in self-study. This time investment depends on the possibility of completing assignments at your employer and your (work) experience.                                                
On-campus
One teaching day per week deals with the teaching for one 15-credit module. You will attend one day per week of on-campus sessions from 09:00 to 17:00 at the Zernike Campus in Groningen, where full-time and modular study students are taught together. During on-campus sessions, you engage with fellow students on exciting assignments that reflect the collaborative nature of the professional workplace. 

Online learning
In addition to the sessions on campus, you learn through guided reading and work with online resources in our professional online learning environment.  

Tuition fees
Tuition fees are determined annually by the Dutch government. Depending on your personal situation, you pay either the statutory tuition fee or institutional tuition fees. Find more information about tuition fees here. Cost per module of 15 EC: €1100,-.
